Over the Fence – November 2008
November 11th, 2008
The sale of Toorale Station out at Bourke has certainly raised a lot of emotions in the area. The general feeling by the locals, that the amount of water that is going to be released, will do little or no good to the river system. The economic effect on the town, by the loss of such a large employer appears devastating. The major fear of the locals is that the property will go back to the National Parks and result in the invasion of every feral animal in the area.
One wonders how the National Park, who is seriously under staffed, is now going to care for and maintain a 91,000 ha property. Probably the thing that has most upset local landholders, is that the whole deal was done in a secret fashion, with no consultation with the local population, in regard to effects on the community.
Seems to be a worrying trend of the green and academic community, having a greater influence on our Government than the people who produce the food and pay the bills.
