Over the Fence – August 2008
August 20th, 2008
Talking to a few of my western farmer mates lately and for those with a bit of crop in the ground, which is starting to look ok, there are a few worrying signs appearing. Not only the sudden drop in world wheat prices, caused by the larger crop in America and the predicted drop of up to $35/ tonne due to deregulation of wheat sales, the talk is now of a large locust plague which just adds to the whole fray.
I often think these fellows have bigger hearts than ‘Phar Lap’ or enjoy continual pain…..
Further to our talk on the closing of TSR’s, once such area which was handed over to the National Parkes and Wildlife Services in Kosciuszko has now been dealt the final blow. A third generation family who has been using this particular route for many years has had it closed to them and looks like will cost up to $26,000 for the transportation of their stock from one side to the other. Looks like the rot has set in!
